This is the first project I was given by my favourite, High School, art teacher… Or my own version of it anyway. The learners are given a piece of paper with one random thing drawn at the top and a completely different thing at the bottom. My teacher told us to “Take our mind on a walk” as we join the two disparate images into one, cohesive whole. We were encouraged to think differently! I prepared this page for an extra art class I give. In this one, I attempted to join the to halves in a way that is meaningful to me. 🙂
While exploring ideas for mother’s day, I stumbled across a Brazilian artist named Romero Britto. He is an amazing artist that uses bright colours in a style that is almost like stained glass windows. He paints warm, happy scenes.
This is my own take on Britto that I made in preparation for a class I did with my grade 5s. It was done on a wooden board. We started by painting the wood white. We did the design on paper first and then transferred it to the white wood. We then painted it with acrylic paint and went over the lines with permanent marker.
I used acrylic paint for everything except the white under painting. I used tempera paint for this…bad mistake! Some of the tempera has since flaked off! 😦
I asked my grade 4 learners to imagine they were 50 years older (so around 60) and they had lived the most amazing life imaginable! They had done exactly what they wanted to do!
I asked them to think of what they had done. I then explained what an autobiography is. They had to imagine that they had written an autobiography for their amazing life! They had to come up with a title, they had to write a little blurb on what the book is about and they could write a few imaginary critic responses to their book. They also had to decorate their book cover by integrating pictures!
This is my autobiography, “Walking on the moon”, written by the 80 year old me. It chronicles the episode in my future life where I traveled to the moon and met an alien named Hank.
The Easter Bunny is a very Euro-centric idea. A bunny would not last long in the African veld. This is a thought I shared with my grade 6s. I told them that it is about time that we came up with a new, African, Easter animal. I then introduced the learners to Franz Marc, a German expressionist artist who would paint various animals in crazy colours, according to how he was feeling. Below is my new idea for an African Easter animal, the Easter Warthog. 🙂
The book “Drawing from the right side of the brain” by Betty Edwards is packed full of exercises that enable artists to use the right side of the brain (the creative side) in their art. One such exercise is drawing a picture that is upside down. You start to really observe rather than use your short hand techniques. This is my own upside down drawing! 🙂 I plan to colour it in in the future.
This was in preparation for an art project I did with the grade 7s. I found this very fun project online here. It was a very fun project that even those kids who struggle with realistic drawing could do well at!
To celebrate the Chinese New Year with my kids I decided to make a Chinese dragon with my grade 6s. It was a really nice project and the kids loved it! I could have done this project with younger kids though as the 12 year old’s didn’t really appreciate how cool it was…:)
I was going to be doing a project with the grade 7s on South African artist, Peter Clarke. In my google lead research, I discovered another British Peter Clarke who was also an artist! He works primarily in collage and I really liked his stuff! I decided to do an art project based around Clarke (British Clarke) with my grade 4s! Here is my own example I could show them.
